Last week we had the opportunity to present the Hiriko Driving Mobility Project in Ecuador. The Minister for the Environment, Marcela Aguiñaga (spotted in the picture) offered us a warm welcome, setting up a meeting with Fabian Zapata, the President of the Galapagos Island Government Council. It was the first contact but they are very interested in becoming an active member of Mobility on Demand Global Program. We also had the opportunity to meet with Carlos Paez the Director of Mobility in Quito and several other university and senior public officials. Recently, Hiriko has also been presented at SOCAP in Amsterdam and directly to Penny Low, the leading social innovation force in Singapore.

Thanks to our wonderful partners in San Francisco, Fariba Rezvani (Far Link, llc) and Miguel Valls (BSP), Hiriko was able to discuss with San Francisco top officials the posibility of incorporating this vibrant city into the Mobility on Demand Global project. We also had the privilege to present the project to Steve Westley, one of the top venture capitalists at Silicon Valley. Apart from being the former California Chief Financial Officer and an advisor to Obama, Steve has been one of the key investors at TESLA.

The Global Innovation Academy in Bilbao

The Global Innovation Academy is a new and pioneering initiative of the Young Foundation developed in collaboration with the Rockefeller Foundation and many others around the world in the social innovation field. Its mission is to provide unique learning experiences to public servants, NGOs, foundations and businesses, in order to support the spread of effective social innovation methods that can tackle the most pressing global issues we face. The programme will be co-hosted by DenokInn, the Basque centre for innovation, entrepreneurship and new business development.

During an intensive three-day programme, participants will be immersed in a highly collaborative learning journey, designed to enable you to adapt and implement cutting-edge methods of social innovation in your respective contexts.

The programme will explore:

• How are practitioners and policy makers around the world applying promising new ideas to tackle ageing and care?
• How can we design policy so that social impact bonds can be applied in different contexts and to different problems?
• Where are the trends in social innovation now – and in the future?

Programme faculty include Geoff Mulgan—former head of policy to Prime Minister Tony Blair and Director of the Young Foundation; and Charlie Leadbeater— a leading authority on innovation and creativity.

A delegation from Hiriko led by MIT-Media Lab professor Kent Larson will present Hiriko at "Green Global Cities" conference organized by The London School of Economics tomorrow, 24 February 2011. The Mayor of San Francisco, Calgary, San José, Incheon Metropolitan City (Korea) and the Deputy Major of Paris among others will have the opportunity to know more about the first self folding electric vehicle. Hi, Elisabet Nilsson at MEDEA here. Many thanks for a very inspiring and well organized study visit. Since we are in the middle of the process of building a fabrication lab/living lab called Fabriken, here I especially appreciated the visit to Bermeo Fab Lab. Rather than an idea (that you asked us to post, Gorka) I would like to post a question addressing challenges that we face when setting up spaces like Fabriken and Bermeo Fab Lab.

In our lab space Fabriken “sustainability” is one of the guiding principles for all activities that are to take place in the space. When it comes to sustainability on a social level it is pretty clear that an open lab space can contribute to such a progress. But what about the ecological aspects? How can we inform users about the costs of the material they are using, about life cycles of products, and the importance of having these aspects in mind – without choking their lust for experimentation with material, and resources?

To be frank, if we really look into e.g. how much a machine costs in terms of energy and material, you might be losing your lust for experimentation. Do you get my point and concern? The question is: how do we implement awareness, and foster a culture of conscious use of material and technology without limiting creativity and experimentation? Or, maybe limitations and awareness are not working against creativity (that is a least what some say), but where do we then put the levels?

¿A qué nos referimos cuando hablamos de emprendimientos sociales? ¿Cuál es su papel en la economía y en la sociedad? ¿Qué podemos hacer para aumentar su impacto social?

El libro “Empresas que inspiran futuros” presenta ocho casos de emprendimientos sociales españoles que han sido modelos de éxito durante los últimos años.

El objetivo del Proyecto Momentum es seleccionar 10 emprendimientos sociales de España y Portugal que tengan una idea clara de cómo escalar su impacto en la sociedad, ofreciéndoles formación, consultoría y acompañamiento para la elaboración de un Plan de Desarrollo así como la presentación del mismo a potenciales financiadores.

En la presentación participará la UPV / EHU como anfitrión, ESADE como impulsor del proyecto y BBVA como principal promotor.

MIT-Media Lab, The London School of Economics Enterprise, InnoZ, DenokInn and Afypaida have met in Hiriko headquarters this week with the purpose of launching the Intelligent City Forum.

Recognising the need to promote and catalyse research-led, applied solutions for future sustainable cities, the partners have resolved this week to create this new tool as a global network of research collaboration, applied technology transfer and knowledge-exchange. ICC endeavours to jointly promote knowledge-exchange, policy development, technology piloting and research collaboration with regard to sustainable urban development, in particular with regard to sustainable mobility, urban renewable energy, and energy-efficient housing.

Carbon Care Asia, Fundación Metropoli, Idom, and many others are also exploring the possibility to become international partners of ICF.This is a picture of the meeting taken by Professor Kent Larson.

El proceso para la identificación de nuevas iniciativas sociales y económicas en la Zona Media de Navarra toca a su fin. Después de 7 meses de trabajo, hemos conseguido formular un proyecto denominado Urban Ecópolis que tendría 5 líneas de trabajo fundamentales: (1) Agricultura Urbana (2) Canales Cortos de Comercialización (3) Cluster de empresas medioambientales (4) Reciclaje de productos agrícolas no industriales y (5) Valorización del Patrimonio Agrícola.

Ahora es necesario definir exhaustivamente el plan de negocio pero tiene muy buena pinta. La idea aprovecha el conocimiento acumulado durante generaciones y proyecta una nueva imágen de marca de la Zona Media hacia el futuro. Si tenemos suerte, pronto veremos a agricultores jubilados de la zona media asesorando a las principales urbes del planeta y los más jóvenes de la zona se dedicarán a la comercialización directa de los productos ecológicos que se cultiven en estas huertas. Gracias a AEZMNA, Nexo y CEN por habernos dado la oportunidad de participar en esta aventura.

Estos días he tenido la oportunidad de volver a Hong Kong para estudiar con el gobierno de esta ciudad-estado la mejor manera de impulsar un proyecto piloto de Hiriko. Además de nuestros socios del MIT-Media Lab y The London School of Economics, hemos sumado a esta aventura a Carbon Care Asia. Esta entidad con base en Hong Kong está liderada por Chong Chan Yau, una persona de esas que merece la pena conocer. Además de trabajar en el gobierno de la ciudad y dirigir durante varios años OXFAM en esta parte del mundo, ahora es la cara visible de la lucha por la sostenibilidad y uno de los impulsores de Dialogue in The Dark.

I know, this blog hasn´t been updated in a very long time. The reason is simple, too much traveling. In early August, Hiriko was invited to present the prototype to Volkswagen Electric Mobility Team. A couple of weeks later, the FabLab annual conference was celebrated in Amsterdam and we were requested to present the Bermeo Fab Lab there . September has also started with a similar tune, an Hiriko delegation had as very promising meeting with the Hong Kong Government to explore potential areas of collaboration in the field of mobility on demand and we also participated in Singapore´s SIX summer school.

Yesterday we were in Berlin invited by Volkswagen´s sister company Carmeq to present the Hiriko project to VW Senior Staff. As you can see in the picture, Dr. Volkmar Tannenberg, Volkswagen Executive Director of Electric and Electronic Development was really interested listening to Retro´s details about the car. Representatives of the big electric german companies and Stefan Gulas, the inventor of the incredible Erockit electric bike were also there. Thank you everybody.

New Fab Labs in Ireland

I was lucky to have the opportunity of visiting Belfast last week. The purpose of this trip was to explore the possibility of launching two new FabLabs in Northern Ireland. Pat Colgan, an old friend who serves as the Chief Executive of SEUPB (Special European Union Programmes Body) invited me and M.I.T. Professor Neil Gershenfeld to explore with local partners the possibility of applying innovation to bring divided communities together. They think that our Fab Lab in Bermeo can be an inspiring example for implementing peace building programmes innovatively.

If we succeed in bulding an strong proposal, DenokInn will be in charge of training the managers of the new labs in methodologies for identifying new social innovation opportunities. I will keep you posted.

Hiriko in Brussels and Amsterdam

I had the opportunity to watch Holland beating Brazil in Amsterdam last week. As you can see in the picture,there was a great atmosphere in the city after such a big surprise. We had been in Brussels that morning presenting the Hiriko project to a delegation of 50 ABN-AMRO private wealth investors.

Just a couple of hours before the match, we took the fast train to Amsterdam . The purpose of this short break was to have an exploratory discussion with the Sustainability Programme Amsterdam about the electric future of the city. Thank you for a warm welcome and great football!

In Istanbul with BMW Foundation

Last weekend I had the priviledge to be invited by the BMW Foundation to their 3rd European Young Leaders Forum.

In the first panel discussion looked closer at Turkey's current status on the road to EU accession and the contradictions in society and politics. The second panel discussion focused on the city of Istanbul as global megacity and hub between two continents. After the panel discussions, the conference topic addressed and examined through field trips to various institutions in Istanbul. On Saturday we met in workshops to deal with concrete examples for promoting social cohesion in Istanbul and from the circle of participants; I hope we contributed to help develop and support the presented projects and institutions.

William J. Mitchell, the former dean of MIT's School of Architecture and Planning, who pioneered urban designs for networked, "smart" cities and helped oversee an ambitious building program that transformed MIT's physical campus, died on June 11 after a long battle with cancer. He was 65.

Mitchell was considered one of the world's leading urban theorists. Through the work of his Smart Cities research group at the MIT Media Lab, he pioneered new approaches to integrating design and technology to make cities more responsive to their citizens and more efficient in their use of resources. He likened tomorrow's cities to living organisms or very-large-scale robots, with nervous systems that enable them to sense changes in the needs of their inhabitants and external conditions, and respond to these needs. A major portion of this new urban infrastructure focused on revamping urban transportation as we know it, and included the development of the CityCar, a light-weight, electric, shared vehicle that folds and stacks like supermarket shopping carts at convenient locations and has all essential mechanical systems housed in the car's wheels. This is the origin of Hiriko, the city car that will be fabricated in the Basque region

Dear friends,

I'm flying back from Budapest where I've spent the last 3 days working with our member Barbara Erös of DemNet (Network for Democracy) and group of contacts developing joint actions in the next 18 months. Hungary will hold the European Presidency next year. The Hungarian group inspired me a reflection I would like to share with all of you. It might be interesting for next week discussion.

In 2008 Euclid Network made its entrance in Hungary running a large conference like the one in Madrid. Our partner was the third largest bank in the country but we didn't have any strong partnership with NGOs. It was a success but without follow-up. The network didn't develop at all in the country until we recently identified Barbara as our local champion. Since then she and her organisation DemNet have gathered a group of civil society/social economy leaders keen on exchanging with peers across borders and has facilitated the communication between the European network and the national group. Today the Hungarians are fully on board in European projects and the Euclid working group is a source of innovation in the country.

In our experince Euclid Network can be effective only if it develops a strong partnership with a local organisation. The local partner - an individual or organisation - coordinates members in the country and facilitates the flow of information, contacts and opportunities between the European and national levels. The members provide inputs, ideas and take part in specific initiatives.I hope next week meeting will help identify the partner and group of members to activate an effective collaboration with the European network and all its members. It would also useful to clarify which areas are of most interest for participants.

Together we can replicate the Hungarian story in Spain! See you next week.

El primer coche eléctrico Hiriko, comprado en una subasta benéfica en Londres

Un empresario escocés ha adquirido en una subasta benéfica en Londres un prototipo a escala del coche eléctrico "Hiriko" que se desarrolla en el Parque Tecnológico de Álava y que se prevé comercializar dentro de dos años.Según han informado hoy a Efe los promotores de esta iniciativa, un empresario escocés, Ian Watson, ha comprado por 7.000 libras esterlinas, unos 8.400 euros, el prototipo de Hiriko en una subasta dedicada a la fundación benéfica Príncipe Carlos.

Representantes del grupo empresarial vasco que desarrolla este modelo junto al Instituto de Tecnología de Massachusetts (MIT) han acudido a esta subasta con un prototipo a escala 1:2, es decir la mitad del tamaño que se fabricará, invitados por la organización. Los responsables de Hiriko, Carlos Fernández Isoird e Iñigo Antia, junto al ingeniero William Lark, han acudido a esta subasta anual, que en esta ocasión se ha dedicado a las energías renovables y la sostenibilidad.

En total se subastaron 18 lotes entre representantes de familias empresariales y financieras británicas, así como banqueros de origen ruso, y se recaudaron 30.000 libras, por lo que el coche Hiriko fue por el que más dinero se pagó.Los representantes de Hiriko aprovecharon esta subasta para presentar su presentar su proyecto y contactar con los responsables de la futura franquicia del taller de montaje en Londres.

Hiriko es un coche eléctrico urbano que, por su alto grado de simplificación, se puede desarrollar con un sistema pionero de fabricación. Se trata de un biplaza eléctrico de reducidas dimensiones que podrá alcanzar los 50 kilómetros por hora, con una autonomía de 120 kilómetros y cuyas baterías se podrán recargar en 12 minutos. El nuevo vehículo no requerirá de cadena de montaje como los coches tradicionales, sino que sus siete módulos se podrán ensamblar en cualquier planta con franquicia del mundo. Además de cuatro ruedas direccionales, el vehículo se recogerá a la hora de aparcar y en el espacio donde entra un utilitario tradicional entrarán tres de este modelo.Los promotores calculan que el primer prototipo estará listo el próximo año y su precio de venta al público podría rondar los 9.000 euros.

El concepto de innovación abierta está de moda. Los que la practican, la definen como la innovación que busca enriquecerse con el conocimiento de los demás, allá donde se encuentre. El riesgo se encuentra en perder la propia personalidad. Muy cerca de casa, en Tafalla, hemos encontrado un ejemplo real de innovación abierta y con raíces.

La Asociación de Empresarios de la Zona Media de Navarra acaba de lanzar un proceso de innovación abierta para la identificación de nuevas oportunidades de desarrollo en la Zona Media con la colaboración de DenokInn. El Observatorio Navarro de Empleo, a través de la CEN, subvenciona este proyecto en el que participan cerca de 20 representantes sociales, económicos y políticos de la Comarca. La novedad más importante se encuentra en la cantidad y calidad de sectores e instituciones representadas. Y es que más de veinte representantes de la política, la sociedad, la economía y la cultura de la comarca participarán hasta el próximo mes de noviembre en este proceso que busca identificar y definir participativamente nuevas oportunidades de desarrollo social, económico y cultural para la Zona Media de Navarra aunando diferentes voluntades y entidades. Pocas veces encontramos un compromiso con la innovación tan concreto y plural plural de los agentes económicos y sociales de un territorio.

En este proceso participan los alcaldes y alcaldesas de Tafalla, Sangüesa, Caparroso y Puente la Reina, así como del Consorcio de Desarrollo de la Zona Media. Entre las empresas destacan Schneider Electric, Alpi Sistemas, Logistic Biotrans, Galar, Valsay, Javier Olagüe, Marcilla, Nexo, Bodegas Neceas y Frisa. Junto a ellos, representantes sindicales, las entidades sociales más representativas e incluso medios de comunicación locales.

Hiriko in Berlin

On 27 May 2010 the Hiriko City Car, a foldable electric vehicle will be presented to the press in Germany for the first time. The fully-functional prototype will only be presented in Germany on this date. InnoZ, jointly with its partners LSE Enterprise, the knowledge transfer and advisory platform of the London School of Economics and the EUREF Institute Berlin, is advising the Hiriko consortium with regard to the testing and market entry of the Hiriko car in Germany.

The initial launch schedule seeks to initiate a wider strategy to position Hiriko in Germany and to develop pilot schemes, to promote initial fleet deployment and to pursue innovative roll-out initiatives in Germany, as well as to identify and to secure both public and commercial partners. As part of the initial launch presentations, InnoZ and EUREF Institute wish to jointly propose and agree a longer-term advisory project with Hiriko relating to the implementation of such a strategy.

In addition, a model of the Hiriko Car will presented to the general public at the Long Night of Science on 5 June on the EUREF Campus. The Long Night of Science is a major annual public science event in Berlin which sees over 80 universities, research institutions and science parks open their doors to the public over a Saturday evening and night. The EUREF campus and all its partners, including the EUREF Institute, InnoZ, BeMobility, Deutsche Bahn, Vattenfall, GASAG, Bosch, RWE and others will present a range of projects around the theme of renewable energy, intelligent city and sustainable mobility. The Hiriko model and audiovisual presentation will take centre stage in the transparent EUREF dome inside the historic Gasometer structure, along with an exhibition of green design projects undertaken by Berlin design students.

El pasado lunes se presentó en Madrid el primer concurso para identificar los 10 proyectos socialmente más innovadores de Europa. Se trata de una iniciativa liderada por las redes de innovación social más importantes de Europa, Euclid Network y Social Innovation Exchange en colaboración con la Comisión Europea. Lo más interesante de todo es que las entidades seleccionadas por la Comisión Europea participarán en un proyecto de “identificación de nuevas oportunidades a gran escala” ubicado en el nuevo parque de Innovación Social de Bizkaia impulsado por Denokinn. Os iré dando toda la información en cuanto me pasen las bases del concurso.

Euclid Network celebrated its first seminar in Spain last Monday despite of the Volcano. It was a great event thanks to an impressive list of participants. More than one hundred third sector leaders attended, including Paul Adamson (Spear), Carlos Alvarez Jimenez and Rosa Gallego (AEF), Miguel Angel Cabra de Luna (ONCE), Stephen Bubb (Acevo), Maria Calvo (Ashoka), Daniela Deuber (BMW Foundation), Elena Garrigues (Garrigues Foundation), Marisa Gomez Crespo (Plataforma ONGs Acción Social), Jon Mancisidor (BBK), Pepa Torres (Luis Vives Foundation), Ricardo Valls (Antares).. but the most interesting part of the event came at the end of the session.

Following the idea of visualizing what social innovation is and promote it across Europe, the European Commission in collaboration with SIX, Euclid Network and other social innovation networks will identify 10 large scale successful social innovation initiatives which represent the great potential for employment and sustainable development in times of recession. The competition will be called "This is European Social Innovation". I will keep you informed.

At the roundtable “Innovation in Funding the third sector and social economy”, organised by Euclid Network (EN) and hosted at the European Parliament by Patrizia Toia MEP, around 30 people among European third sector leaders, MEPs and European officials, gathered together to productively and innovatively discuss the topic of funding for the third sector. Daria Serani, on behalf of Toia MEP, together with Filippo Addarii, Euclid Network, chaired the event.

Daria Serani underlined the importance of civil society and third sector, referring to European Parliament resolution on Social Economy (February 2009), better known as “Toia report”.“Promoting a culture of social innovation and sustainable funding in the third sector and better collaboration with European Institutions are the drivers for EN”, Filippo Addarii, Executive Director of Euclid Network, stressed. The financial crisis has confirmed the need for a new economic model in which the third sector is a leading force together with the other sectors. To rise up to the challenge the sector has to invest in its capacity and develop new income streams to tackle social problems. The EU has to recognized such a role and support it.

A good example of a good practice. The social Innovation Park.

Social leaders have a long tradition of collaborative projects but a business park fully dedicated to social innovation has never been experienced in Europe. The Social Innovation Park (SI Park) is a pioneering initiative promoted by DenokInn, the Basque Centre for Social and Corporate Innovation, aiming to provide the best environment for social leaders and institutions to cooperate, learn from each other and to build new initiatives.

The Social Innovation Park (SI Park) will host in the greater Bilbao area of Northern Spain consolidated third sector initiatives and emerging innovation projects aiming to create the new “Social Silicon Valley”. All of them will benefit from the new resources incorporated to this initiative: the Social Innovation Laboratory (G-Lab), the Social Innovation Academy and the Social Enterprise Generator. SI Park will offer international entities working on this field a unique opportunity to be present in one of the most innovative experiences connected to social enterprising.

The Social Innovation Park will start operating in June 2010, covering initially 72.000 squared meters, and more than 50 entities (NGOs, think tanks, living labs) and companies will be established. This project is supported by national and local authorities with an initial budget of 6 million Euros.

Telepresence conference on Social Innovation

Euclid Network (EN) in partnership with the Young Foundation, Social Innovation eXchange (SIX) and Cisco will be running a telepresence event on social innovation. Cisco telepresence creates a live, face-to-face communication experience helping people to meet and share ideas across borders. Using some of the most sophisticated teleconference technology, the event will bring together 5 social innovators from 6 capitals - Paris, London, Berlin, Lisbon, Madrid and Brussels - to share their successful stories. European officials will also be in attendence. This is a pilot event and further similar events may be organised if this one is successful.

The event will take place 9 April 15:00 - 17:00 and DenokInn will be the coordinator of the Madrid team.

I am presenting the Social Innovation Park in Berlin this week. Euclid Network and European Exchange have made it possible. The Hub Berlin is also hosting me very warmly (see in the picture how cosy the place is).

It is too early to say who is going to be finally connected to SI Park but the first impression is that we are creating great expectations. I have also met with the BMW Foundation and the Innovation Centre for sustainable mobility. They seem to be honestly interested in the Social Innovation Park and Hiriko. Tomorrow is the day for presenting it to the Federal Association of German Foundations.

"La presidencia española de la Unión Europea fijó a través de su discurso de apertura la necesidad de reforzar los aspectos sociales de las políticas comunitarias. Esta es una buena noticia para el tercer sector porque lleva reclamando desde hace mucho tiempo una oportunidad para diseñar multilateralmente nuevas formas de responder al escenario que ha generado la recesión económica.

En el contexto actual, no podemos actuar como si nada hubiera pasado. Los gobiernos y las empresas no pueden liderar la recuperación económica sin contar con el tercer sector. El tercer sector es un bastión de los derechos sociales y del pluralismo, así como la fuente de nuevas formas de participación ciudadana, crecimiento sostenible, empleo e innovación social, a nivel local y global. Sus potencialidades sólo pueden ser plenamente expresadas tomando un nuevo camino de liderazgo construido conjuntamente entre instituciones, entidades sociales y proyectos empresariales que operan en este campo.

Este encuentro organizado por la red Euclid, reunirá líderes europeos del tercer sector, responsables institucionales, representantes de la Unión Europea y emprendedores sociales con el objetivo de explorar el nuevo escenario creado por la recesión económica. EN members setting up the 'New Social Silicon Valley

Euclid Network member Gorka Espiau from DenokInn has just secured a €6million grant to create Europe's first Social Innovation Park, dubbed 'The New Social Silicon Valley'.

Social leaders have a long tradition of collaborative projects but a business park fully dedicated to third sector innovation. The Social Innovation Park (SI Park) in the greater Bilbao area of Northern Spain, will consolidate third sector initiatives and emerging innovation projects aiming to create the new "Social Silicon Valley".

Euclid Network (EN) will be primarily involved in the Social Innovation Academy, offering training for third sector leaders.

Gorka Espiau will present the project to EN and ACEVO members in London on 12 February.

This is a great opportunity to be involved in a project that will lead the way in social innovation in Europe and an inspiration for governments on how solutions to social problems can be achieved.

In the opening speech of the Spanish presidency of the EU the PM Zapatero stressed citizens want more Social Europe and room for engagement. This is a priority for the Spanish presidency. This is good news for third sector/social economy which has asked for such opportunity for far too long and multi-stakeholder action is necessary to tackles the consequences of the recession. After the global crisis it can’t be business as usual. Government and business can’t lead on their own leaving the sector at the margins distributing wealth in excess.The third sector is a bastion of rights and pluralism, and new source of citizens’ engagement, sustainable growth, employment and social innovation both locally and globally. However, its potentials can be fully expressed only taking a new role and work in partnership with the other stakeholders.

DenokInn is looking for foundations, charities, social enterprises, NGOs, social economy enterprises, cooperatives, financial community programmes, businesses offering social services and products, living labs, think-tanks, entrepreneurial schools, social innovation and third sector networks to explore the possibility of benefiting from SI Park. Those entities interested in exploring their participation in the park may choose between the following options:

1.- SI Park Space Probe. A large number of third sector organizations, private corporations and public institutions have requested a test-bed in the park. With this purpose, SI Park will offer in 2010 the possibility of hosting international delegations to visit the park and discuss the details and conditions for a twelve-month trial residency.mDenokInn also welcomes international organizations, companies and governments to join an international network discussing the launching of SI Park. Members of this network will receive updated information on the latest developments in order to facilitate their analysis on further possibilities.

2. Si Park Project_based partnership. SI Park offers the possibility of project-based participation in the park. Potential partners are invited to inform DenokInn about their fields of interest. SI Park will co-design with potential partners concrete international collaboration proposals based in Bilbao. To facilitate third sector organizations, private corporations and public institutions to explore these projects, an advance team of DenokInn staff is ready to visit them and facilitate idea-generation, design and development into an rapid organizational or business prototype.

3. SI Park Strategic partners. SI Park is looking for international strategic partners. These partners will form the International Steering Committee, monitoring the launching phase and exploring new avenues for the future. The International Steering Group will coordinate the extension plan for new Social Innovation Parks around the globe.

We are living fascinating times. The whole social welfare system is reinventing itself with new paradigms. DenokInn offers a sustainable and equitable approach to the structure and management of social innovation ventures. The New Social Silicon Valley

Social leaders have a long tradition of collaborative projects but a business park fully dedicated to third sector innovation has never been experienced in Europe. The Social Innovation Park (SI Park) will host in the Greater Bilbao area of Northern Spain consolidated third sector initiatives and emerging innovation projects aiming to create the new “Social Silicon Valley”. All of them will benefit from the new resources incorporated to this initiative: the Social Innovation Laboratory (G-Lab), the Social Innovation Academy and the Social Enterprise Generator. SI Park is a pioneering infrastructure promoted by DenokInn, the Basque Centre for Social and Corporate Innovation, which provides the best environment for third sector entities to cooperate, learn from each other and to build new shared enterprises.

The Basque region of Spain has a long tradition of a vibrant economy powered by a deep social approach. This is the homeland of Mondragon Cooperative Corporation and the Guggenheim Museum, promoted and funded by the local authorities. The Basque area has also demonstrated a successful history in terms of socio-economic regeneration. This is one of the few international cases which overcame the steel and shipbuilding crisis of the 80s, transforming itself into a new economy employing 100,000 workers around the globe. In addition, the Basque region is leading renewal energy enterprises by birthing transnationals corporations such as Gamesa and Iberdrola.

According to the UN Human Development Index parameters, the Basque region ranks as the world´s most socially balanced countries. SI Park will offer, therefore, a unique opportunity for international entities working in this field to be present in one of the most innovative environments connected to social enterprising.

Designed and nurtured for over a decade, the Social Innovation Park will start operations in June 2010. Initially, the Social Silicon Valley will cover 72,000 square metres located in Santurtzi, 25 km away from the Bilbao international airport. The master project has been supported by national and local authorities with an initial phase budget of 6 million Euro. Basque, Spanish and European institutions are also funding several initiatives related to the project that are already being implemented in the area. Long-term working relationships will be developed with a network of 1,000 professionals around the globe representing more than fifty national and international entities to be established at the Social Innovation Park.

Social Innovation Laboratory (G-Lab)

SI Park will host a laboratory for identifying emerging social tendencies (G-Lab) applying participatory democracy methodologies. G-Lab will evaluate current social services provided by the public administration to design and develop innovative testbeds.

SI Park will operate under an open innovation framework, with membership annually determining potential areas of laboratory research. As a priority, G-Lab´s research will be royalty-free to all institutions present in Bilbao and it will be associated to the leading international networks of social innovation laboratories.

Social Innovation Academy

SI Park will provide on-site and on-line training to bring fresh ideas to services provided by third sector institutions, organizations and enterprises. The Social Innovation Academy will offer a regularly-scheduled programs: Intensive Training for Third Sector Leaders, project-based education, and welcoming “spin off” training centres from the most successful entrepreneurial schools. The Social Innovation Academy will collaborate for this purpose with Euclid, the European Network of third sector leaders, and with the Social Innovation Exchange, the global alliance committed to growing the capacity of the field.

Social Enterprise Generator

Collaborating entities within the SI Park will be offered the opportunity to incubate new social enterprises and emerging tendencies identified by the G-lab will encourage SI Park membership to launch new projects.

With the purpose of providing the necessary support to new innovation entrepreneurs at SI Park, DenokInn has signed a collaboration agreement with the London School of Economics Enterprise. The new innovation entrepreneurs will be trained, mentored, and evaluated by SI Park staff, incorporating the know-how present in a privileged social environment. Finally, the Social Club of Angels will provide seed capital for new enterprises, guaranteeing a comprehensive approach to the innovation process.

SI Park will also host a pilot project led by DenokInn to generate social and cooperative enterprises under an innovative approach. Local institution will allow social income receptors to test new entrepreneurial initiatives without loosing their benefits. The DenokInn pilot will allow a large number of small and medium-sized enterprises to be located in the park, integrating related experiences successfully tested in Sweden and France.

New partners

DenokInn will design, conceptualize services and coordinate the international programmes established at the park. DenokInn´s strategic leadership is a timely call for foundations, charities, social enterprises, NGOs, social economy enterprises, cooperatives, financial community programmes, businesses offering social services and products, living labs, think-tanks, entrepreneurial schools, social innovation and third sector networks to explore the possibility of benefiting from SI Park.

Basque Social Innovation Park

DenokInn, the Basque Centre for Social and Corporate Innovation will promote in 2010 the first European Social Innovation Park that will be located in Santurtzi, (Great Bilbao area of northern Spain). This project is supported by the local authorities and the Spanish Government with an initial budget of 6 million Euro. For the first time, third Sector organizations, charities, NGOs and businesses focused on social innovation will have the opportunity to work together, learn from each other and develop new joint enterprises in a highly innovative environment. Acabamos de terminar el seminario para lanzadores de nuevos negocios y parece que los participantes han quedado muy satisfechos de la calidad de las presentaciones. Parece también que lo que más ha gustado ha sido el ejercicio de constelaciones organizaciones impartido por Guillermo Echegaray, así que os paso su enlace por si queréis tener más información. Otra cosa,Euclid Network ha convocado un encuentro europeo de líderes del tercer sector para el próximo 5 de mayo en Madrid. Ya os daré más detalles pero va a ser un encuentro realmente interesante para conocer las iniciativas y las personas más innovadoras en este campo del viejo continente. DenokInn va a colaborar con la organización del encuentro pero está abierto a todo el mundo que quiera echar una mano.

Como se puede comprobar en mi dedicación al blog, las últimas semanas han sido de locura. DenokInn ya vuela a velocidad de crucero y pronto os daré a conocer nuestros grandes proyectos para el 2010. De momento, os dejo esta información sobre un curso para "Lanzadores de Nuevos Negocios" que hemos organizado en colaboración con The London School of Economics. Además de nuestro equipo, participarán Garrick Jones (uno de los creativos más interesantes asociados a The Box) y Guillermo Echegaray de Geiser Works. Para los que no le conoceís todavía Guillermo es el sicólogo navarro que ha introducido las constelaciones organizacionales en España. Si alguien está interesado, tendrá que darse vidilla porque apenas quedan plazas.

Soft Power

La red Euclid nos ha solicitado colaboración para organizar un gran encuentro de líderes sociales en Madrid con motivo de la próxima presidencia española en la Unión Europea. Esta red está formada por los protagonistas de la verdadera innovación social en nuestro continente, los embajadores del "soft power" Son los máximos responsables de organizaciones sociales de todo tipo, ecologistas, y ONGDs. Su objetivo es fortalecer las relaciones entre las personas que están al frente de todo lo que queda al margen de las instituciones y el mundo financiero, para que su trabajo sea de mayor calidad y sobre todo, más eficiente. Os iremos informando de los pasos que se vayan dando para extender esta red en nuestro país. De momento, os invito a ver este vídeo con una presentación de Geoff Mulgan, un verdadero líder social del Siglo XXI.

Teknika visita DenokInn

Un grupo de profesores de formación profesional que están diseñando un módulo de eco-diseño en colaboración con Tknika visitaron ayer el Fab Lab de Bermeo. Entre las muchas cosas interesantes que surgieron en la conversación me quedo con una reflexión de uno de los profesores en relación con el diseño y la conceptualización de los productos y servicios. Comentaba que no le gustaba el título eco-diseño para definir la fabricación de muebles desde una perspectiva respetuosa con el medio ambiente. La razón era simple pero contundente, los criterios de sostenibilidad medioambiental ya forman parte ineludible de todo proceso de fabricación. En seguida me vino a la mente el trabajo de Tim Brown y el "design thinking". Os paso este link a un vídeo muy interesante.

Hasta el momento la actividad de DenokInn ha sido bastante discreta. Durante los últimos meses, hemos preferido trabajar entre bambalinas para poder ofrecer un proyecto realmente potente antes de sacarlo a la luz pública. Todavía quedan muchas por hacer pero ya estamos en condiciones de presentar las primeras grandes iniciativas en curso y algunos resultados. Yo me encargo del apartado de formación, pero en esta aventura todas las acciones están conectadas y a todo el equipo le toca ponerse las pilas en campos donde no nos habíamos movido hasta ahora.

Mi intención con el blog es compartir lo que estamos haciendo de forma que todos podamos enriquecernos. Ya se, es la deformación profesional de juntar resolución de conflictos, procesos participativos e innovación. Seguiremos informando.
